Description:

Reptile only found in New Zealand; unchanged for 225 million years; was around in the age of dinosaurs; called a "living fossil".

Habitat:

Ground dwelling; lives in burrows, sometimes in nesting burrows of shearwaters, where it cuddles up to chicks for warmth.

Notes:

Twenty tuatara were recently released into a protected habitat on Te Kuri, the southern arm of Poverty Bay, Gisborne.

It felt between warm and cold, and not rough or prickly, but fairly smooth.
