Pararge aegeria
Very confident, it allows us to easily observe its obverse when, when it perches, it spreads its wings. Therefore we can also differentiate between both sexes. The male, represented in the image of this spotting, has well-marked androconia on its forewings, (indicated with an arrow in the second photo) which gives it a darker appearance. The female, however, lacking these pheromone-expelling sexual scales, she appears cleaner, more orange. Its caterpillars, green and very mimetic, feed on various species of grasses, mainly belonging to the genera Poa, Dactylis, Festuca ...
The speckled wood is a medium-sized butterfly very easy to see, since in addition to being located in riverside forests, forest roads, etc., it also frequents urban gardens and orchards.
