Abbot's Bagworm Moth

Oiketicus abbotii

Description:

It was super strange in that it is made in the general shape of a chrysalis but made of tiny hollow sticks.

Habitat:

I found the chrysalis mounted on a guy wire protective sleeve for a major power cable tower at Freedom Park in Valdosta, GA. The powerlines run right through the park's frisbee golf range. The county does a remarkable job of 1. maintaining the grounds for the frisbee golf range and 2. they do a great job maintaining large sections of wildflower patches, tall, tall grass for the native species. This part of the powerlines were in the tall grass and wildflower patches.

Notes:

I was super excited to find one of these. I've seen them before in books and online but never in person. It makes me wonder how they are built. It has to be constructed by the caterpillar but I have so many questions...
