Hey Sarah, these are a slime mold not a fungus.

They were pretty small. My son brought them to me on a chunk of decaying wood. Thank you for the id.

Nice finding sarah,how big where the balls?they where in a trunk,rigth?if they are tiny,arround 1cm,max,in that case it should be the Wolf milk , Lycogala epidendrum
