Lycaena phlaeas
Although the name 'American Copper' indicates that it is a native butterfly to North America, it is thought to be an introduced species from Europe during the 18th century. This theory is supported by the eastern population‘s preferred food plants, Sheep Sorrel & Curled Dock, both which are introduced Eurasian weeds.
Northeastern North America, south to Arkansas - west to North Dakota also Alaska & western Canada. Pastures, landfills, vacant lots, road edges, old fields; rocky places in alpine habitats, and tundra in the arctic. Host Plant: Buckwheat (Polygonaceae) family including sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella), curled dock (Rumex crispus), and Oxyria digyna.
