Spiny softshell turtle (female)

Apalone spinifera

Description:

The spiny softshell turtle is a species of softshell turtle, one of the largest freshwater turtle species in North America. They get their name from the spiny, cone-like projections on the leading edge of their carapace, which are not scutes (scales).

Habitat:

Pond within a City park

Notes:

This turtle wasn't actively digging a nest but she seemed like she was thinking about it. Trouble was, she was in a public area that was about to get busy. I didn't want her to be molested by anyone so I walked her back to the pond. (all photos and video were taken via my cell phone so their quality isn't the greatest)
