American Goldfinch

Spinus tristis

Description:

A small finch with a short, conical bill and a small, head, long wings, and short, notched tail. Spring males are brilliant yellow and shiny black with a bit of white.

Habitat:

American Goldfinch are found in weedy fields and floodplains. In cultivated areas, roadsides, orchards, and backyards and feeders. American Goldfinch sit in the branches of leafy trees and young Alder trees. American Goldfinch can be found in the tall grasses along shorelines.

Notes:

American Goldfinch are fun to spot in wild grasses as they challenge your vision with dashes of color moving about. They are quick and playful in pairs flying close to the ground. I often watch American Goldfinches in field and small leafy trees along the shoreline of the bay. Often an American Goldfinch will sit upon a bare branch and sing, which allows it to be spotted.
