Spotting

Description:

Small red mushroom amid fallen pine needles. Less than 2 inches across. Looks like the cap has fallen. Got a side view, couldn't get underneath for a shot of the gills, but they were long, fine and tan-light brown.

I have a similar scenario on my apple tree. i will check that out, We also have a lot of ants on that tree. Never connected the two. Curious now.

I was surprised about the ants, Jemma. Seems like some pretty serious wood-chewing for ants. But awhile back, my friend noticed the stump and pulled part of the bark away to see what was going on ... and hundreds of ants came boiling out. Thanks for your help thinking that one through!
