Tormentil

Potentilla erecta

Description:

Irish name: Néalfartach Common Tormentil (Potentilla erecta syn. Tormentilla erecta, Potentilla tormentilla, "Tormentil root") is a herbaceous perennial belonging to the rose family (Rosaceae), also known as Septfoil or simply as "tormentil" (which may also refer to similar species of Potentilla however). Very similar to Potentilla erecta, this little perennial has slightly larger, bright yellow flowers (14-18mm across), with 4 or 5 petals, at least 20 carpels, longer stems which root at leaf junctions (see photo), a basal rosette which persists, and short-stalked upper leaves. It flowers from June to September on banks, roadsides and woodland, not so commonly found as Potentilla erecta. It is a native plant and it belongs to the family Rosaceae.
