African buffalo

Syncerus caffer

Description:

Shoulder height can range from 1 to 1.7 m (3.3 to 5.58 ft) and its head-and-body length can range from 1.7 to 3.4 m (5.6 to 11.2 ft). This herd were relaxing and drinking water next to a mud-hole.

Habitat:

In Mkhaya Game reserve. Lowveld, unspoilt wilderness.

Notes:

This animal looks quite harmless, and especially if you have previous experience from the calm Asian Buffalo. The are related but the African buffalo can not be domesticated. Buffalo are reported to kill more hunters in Africa than any other animal. They are known to ambush hunters that have wounded or injured them. They have also been known to attack people that have harmed them even years after the event. A buffalo has four times the strength of an ox, according to research by Dr. John Conde — he tested their pulling strength. This explains why they are able to tip a motorcar. There are reports of buffalos killing lions, and they can seek out and kill lion cubs — probably as a preventative punishment.

Buffalos has a funny hairstyle. For your own safety, do not laugh when they are nearby. Buffaloes are powerful.
