Abortive Entoloma

Entoloma abortivum


This mushroom was found to be parasitic of Armillaria sp. of mushrooms. When in the process of parasitizing, the Abortive Entoloma produces these oddly shaped fruiting bodies. Funky, whitish, ear-shaped mushrooms. Growing on the ground in leaf litter.


Temperate forest. Rockwood County Park, Virginia.


This species also produces a more common looking gray gilled mushroom fruiting body. One more reference:
