Laughing Gull

Leucophaeus atricilla

Description:

This is a gray and white bird with a black hood and black tail feathers. It has white arcs around the eyes, although the arcs on this guy were not very pronounced. It has a reddish bill and legs.

Habitat:

Habitat: plowed fields, shorelines, beaches, saltmarshes, mangroves and coastal urban areas. Range: Coastal areas of North and South America. Nesting: Creates nests on sand, rocks, dead vegetation, and leaves of low plants. They have 1 brood per year with a clutch size of 2-4 eggs. Diet: The Laughing gull diet includes, but is not limited to Insects, snails, crabs, crab eggs, other bird eggs, and squid.

Notes:

I was down visiting the Texas Gulf coast and got a few shots of the gulls. They are always fun to see. FUN FACTS: Laughing Gulls remove hatched eggshells after each bird hatches so that it will not interfere with the hatching of the last egg in the nest. Colonies of these birds were nearly wiped out during the late 19th century in the northeastern United States due to egg and plume hunting. The oldest gull on record was approximately 22 years old. Laughing gulls can form pair colonies of up to 25,000 in size. Ref: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Laug...
