Description:

Orange segmented body, with black band around middle, and six black legs. Looks fat.

Habitat:

Ground. It was crawling across backyard and through the grass.

Notes:

Wondering if this bug is native to south Louisiana or an invasive species

The females are flightless, the males have wings but cannot sting.

Wow! Thanks for the help in identifying this creature. I've seen them around and always wondered what they were. So they are a type of flightless wasp?

A type of wasp, they are indigenous to North America and found over most of the eastern half of the country. They are also known as "Cow Killers" because of their painful sting.
