I have no idea. Sorry to say. They both look so much alike. I am looking at the photo zoomed in and it does seem to have small spines. I think the best thing is for me to go diving again and try to find him again.
That looks a good chance Ron. They look remarkably similar superficially but the head/mouth shape and lack of spines seems right. Do you feel like adding an ID suggestion above?
Appears to be Monocentris japonicus (Pineconefish)
