Giant Leopard Moth caterpillar

Hypercompe scribonia

Description:

About 13mm long. Body is is covered with small bumps and is orange with black bands. Body covered with black setae of more or less uniform length. Setae are evenly spaced and not clustered in clumps or tufts.

Habitat:

Deciduous forest. This one was on pokeberry, which it did not appear to have fed on.

Notes:

This individual had apparently recently molted. The last larval skin can be seen in the upper right hand corner. Found along Cottonwood trail

Possibly. It has less of a tufted appearance than most Salt Marsh Moth caterpillars I have seen, but again, it had probably just molted so I'm not sure how that would affect the appearance.
