Leaf Nosed Bat

Phyllostomus hastatus

Description:

Very large leaf-nosed bat. The forearm (FA) alone is 8.5 cm long. The total wingspan is 45-50 cm. It is a deep chocolate color with a dark face and lighter shading over the shoulders. Based on the length of the forearm, the only Genus it could be is Phyllostomus. Of the 4 species, P. hastatus is the only one with a FA of over 7 cm.

Habitat:

This one was found flying around our upstairs bedroom in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador.

Notes:

I grabbed my heavy welders gloves and we proceded to take pictures before I let it go. It bit hard enough to draw blood even through the heavy welders gloves. ID based on measurements from Neotropical Rainforest Mammals (A Field Guide) by Louise H. Emmons
