Trigonospila brevifacies
This small fly had a body length of about 6 mm with clear wings extending past the body. The thorax was black with transverse patterns of white. Eyes were red. Calipters clearly visible. The narrow abdomen had black and white bands and a median black stripe. A few setae were seen on the last few abdominal segments.
Spotted resting on a young eucalyptus tree.
These flies are parasitoids of lepidopteran larvae. These flies were introduced to New Zealand to control the light brown apple moth Epiphyas postvittana.
Thanks to Mark Ridgway for the ID suggestion. It does look more like T. brevifacies - common around these parts.
Family: Tachinidae
