Metricus Paper Wasp

Polistes metricus

Description:

Large , black wings and abdomen. Redish brown thorax.

Habitat:

Likes to nest on human structures. Especially under the eves.

Notes:

These wasps can make large colonies. They have a powerful sting. This nest had only the queen and one sister. These wasps aren't aggressive until the nests get larger and there are numerous adults present. As a carpenter I have to frequently work near these colonies. When I need to eliminate a nest I use a long stick and knock it down. Once the nest is on the ground the wasps are confused that they can't find the nest in its former location and are no longer aggressive. This allows the queen to start a new nest. Sometimes in the same location sometimes elsewhere. Much better than using a wasp spray that kills the colony. As they consume large quantities of caterpillars. I only disturb them when they are a threat. My chickens love a nest full of larva. Forgot to add the third pic originally. It's the queens sister on a nearby doorknob.
