Thank you. It was dead when I found it and I picked it up to get a better picture. That's when the red patch fell off.

Looks like a Bumble Bee, the Nevada Bumble Bee (Bombus nevadensis) seems close to. To be honest I don't see any red marks on this one. However Hunt's Bumble Bee (also found in Montana has some very obvious red on the back:
