Spotting

Habitat:

Shallows at low tide

Notes:

These are not regulars at our local beach but I do see them from time to time and would like to know what they are and if they are dangerous at all.

Also the Golden-mouth Volute (cymbiola chrysostoma) and Cymbiola cymbiola, wich are subspecies, are edible and show a large range of shades, including dark colors...And the living mollusks bodies are having black & white patterns.

I believe it's an imperial volute, it's not lethal and actually is edible

Wow. Thank you for that information. I will definitely keep away from them. And keep my son and dog out of the shallows at low tide!

Great spotting is from the Conidae family or cone shell, i have never seen one like this but the tube head tell me is one, definitely is dangerous never pic one whit your hands, this mollusk has one of the most toxic venom's in wildlife.
Here are some reference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conidae

Nice spotting Gemma! I hope you get an ID soon.
