Large-Tailed Nightjar

Caprimulgus macrurus

Description:

This Bird was spotted in Layang-Layang Island, a man-made Island which housed the Malaysian Navy and a Dive Resort. It is probably a migratory bird. During this trip to the Island, there was some thunderstorm and lots of birds were finding refuge on the island as their feathers were wet and they have difficulty flying. This bird was among a few that rested on the grassy areas by the side of the runway.

I love the Nightjars. Beautiful birds, and very unusual. This one has great markings, and what a treat to see the wings extended like this. A beautiful photo series, Albert, and a wonderful spotting. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, @Maria. They were resting in the grassy areas, quite well camouflaged.
When I moved closer to them, that's when they showed the aggressive behavior and tried to hop away into the runway (its the airstrip) as they were not able to fly properly, probably due to the wet feathers.

Interesting spotting - did it move to the roadway in an attempt to fly away?
