Hairy Woodpecker

Picoides villosus

Description:

Female feeding her male fledgling chick. Juvenile males have a red patch toward the front of their head. As they mature, this spot turns black, and the red spot will migrate to the back of the head.

Notes:

These often get mixed up with their smaller cousin, the downy woodpecker. The hairy woodpecker is about two times the size of the downy.
