American Red Squirrel

Tamiasciurus hudsonicus

Description:

Red squirrels are smaller, but more aggressive and territorial than the gray squirrel. I used to watch them actively chase the grays away from the bird feeders at our old house. In the winter season, their coat becomes a bit more dull. They regain their bright reds in spring.

Notes:

This one came up on our deck early one morning. The cats were watching from inside, and she seemed rather agitated by that. You can see how she was thumping her hind feet in the first photo. Lots of angry tail-flicking and chattering.
