Verbascum thapsus
Biennial. The first year it produces a basal rosette of large, densely hairy leaves. The second year it sends up a single yellow flowering stalk to 6 feet.
Common in disturbed ground, fields, open woods, and along roadsides.
Native of Europe, but widely naturalized in North America. The leaves provide a yellow dye for wool, and a tea to soothe sore throats.
