Plovercrest

Stephanoxis loddigesii

Description:

The spectacular southern subspecies of Plovercrest Stephanoxis loddigesii (Purple-crested with duler darker chest) was formerly (e.g., Cory 1918, Pinto 1937) considered a separate species from S. lalandi (Green-crested and striking deep purple breast), but Peters (1945) treated them as conspecific. This dinamite species is certainy an excellent candidate for a future split!

Notes:

The lek behavior of the Plovercrest (Stephanoxis lalandi) has been described by Pizo. See the abstract at this link http://www.bioone.org/doi/abs/10.1676/11...
