Sand Goanna (Goanna)

Varanus gouldii

Description:

Also known as Goanna or Monitor lizard, Gould's monitor, it is a member of the monitor family and can grow to almost 2 metres. This one was small in comparison with some 'models', its colouring and patterning were exquisite. A meat eater, supporting its diet with insects, carrion, birds and eggs. Long agile body covered in scaled skin that is highly variable in patterns between individuals, lighter belly, rest of body covered in bands and blotches and intricate mosaics of pattern in black, browns and creams. Walks with a swagger, runs with speed and is often seen climbing the trunk of a tree where birds will alert others to the danger.

Habitat:

Found throughout Australia in all environments, this one in eastern bushland and surrounding gardens.

Thanks Emily!
The goanna posed beautifully while still going about the business of searching for food.
