Leptocentrus taurus
Membracidae; Centrotinae; Leptocentrini; Leptocentrus taurus Fabricius, 1775. This little bug is known as the Thorn Mimic Treehopper or the Eggplant Horned Planthopper. I have taken many pictures of this bug over the years, but have been holding back from posting them on Project Noah because I cannot find good reliable scientific sources to cite. However, I have decided to go ahead and post a few of my L. taurus spottings. So they will appear in close succession. Please see Notes below.
Spotted in our front garden sitting on a sapling Currant Tree (Antidesma bunius) known in the Philippines as Bignay. Plant identification - http://www.stuartxchange.com/Bignay.html...
There are many photos of this bug on inaturalist.org (and one or two other sites), but I am pretty sure that the contributors to those sites are amateur enthusiasts just like me. The ideal situation would be to have confirmation from Wikipedia or EOL, but they don't seem to have much info. on this hopper. So, I have decided to go with two Project Noah spottings - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/36... and https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/14.... The two PN contributors of these spottings, arne.roysland and Agnes Adique Talavera have been very professional in their descriptions and identifications in all of their spottings and if they both say that this is Leptocentrus taurus, that is good enough for me.
