Picoides pubescens
The combination of small size, white back and small stubby bill distinguishes this common woodpecker. The female differs from the males in that it lacks the occipital red patch.
Widespread and common... found across most the US continent, from coast to coast, north and south. Can be found anywhere there are trees.
This little guy was pounding away at the big dead tree out back. Being on the 3rd floor of an old house, I have a great view of the many woodpeckers (or other birds) that decide to perch in that old tree. SOURCE: Smithsonian Handbooks: Birds of New England (Fred J. Alsop III)
