Spotting

Hi lamewborn. I haven't been able to find pictures of the young ones of this snake. The link I sent says, "When they’re first born, they are speckled brown." That matches your snake and I don't see any other snake in Idaho that it could possibly be. Nice looking little snake. Good catch.
