Superb Parrot

Polytelis swainsonii

Description:

Beautiful Green long tailed parrot. 37 - 42cm long, slender and bright light green. Males (pictured) have a bright yellow forehead and bib with a scarlet border. It also has a light turquoise patch on the crown. The bill is a dark pink. Females are similar to males with the absence of the yellow and scarlet around the head.

Habitat:

Riverine and flood plain forest especially Red River Gum. Birds seen here in southern NSW Australia. They are migratory through NSW and follow the Namoi and Maquarie river systems seasonally. Due to the increasing rarity of this bird I have not put an exact location in this spotting.

Notes:

This is a classic case where the Red List status for a species needs some updating. Superb Parrots only live in a very restricted area in NSW and northern Victoria. There habitat is under extreme pressure and they are only found in a few localized areas.

Thank you Liana for your comments and support. I hope the holiday season has gone well for you. I have been a bit busy but hope to post some more Aussie birds and animals shortly. Nothing as exciting as your Western Quoll from last year however! Rob

Thank you Jim. Having spent a morning seeing the odd bird from a distance, it was amazing to get this close to one just before I was due to leave the area. These guys are getting harder and harder to find.

Thank you Polilla. I got extremely lucky to get close to this bird. The colours are extraordinary and as you can see from the 3rd image, blend incredibly well with their grass environment.
