Pelecanus occidentalis
These flock of pelicans was following a big school of fish right next to the shore. It was a good moment to catch them in action. Although I add the wave splash pic first you can see in the second pic how the bird in the left was already preparing for it :-)
Shoreline a bit North from Piedras Blancas, CA.

That first shot is well timed. Beauty.
Thanks, James! :-)
I love the wave splash behind the birds in #1, great series Marta!
I just included a video that shows the bird feeding frenzy :-)
Yes! It was truly spectacular..at some point I was even fearing for the passing cormorants and gulls not to be taken into those pelican bills but fortunately they have very good reflexes..haha! :-)
It's real fun to watch them dive for food.
Then I was twice as lucky! :-)
There was a huge school of fish being followed by birds. A part from gulls there was all these pelicans and also many cormorants which I will show in a next spotting. The birds sort of brought the school towards the shore (or perhaps bigger fishes attacking at the same time). There was also whales in the distance that we saw late on so there must have been a lot of plancton and small fish in the area at that moment.
Wow! to see so many! These are endangered!
