Southern Crab Apple or Narrow-leaf Crab Apple

Malus angustifolia

Description:

Small tree w/short trunk & spreading branches. Ht up to 30'. Dia to 1'. Leaves 1 to 2 3/4" long, elliptical or oblong. Somewhat wavy sawtooth Twigs brown & hairy when young Bark is gray & brown & furrowed. Flowers 1 to 1 1/2" wide w/5 rounded pink petals in clusters on long stalks. Fragrant in Spring. Fruit is 3/4 to 1" in dia, look like small apples, but are sour & yellow-green, turning reddish on ground.

Habitat:

Moist soils of valleys, borders of Forests & old fields Range S. Virginia south to N Florida West to Louisiana & north to arkansas. This one by main gate at Cushing Park in Canton, Ga 30115

Notes:

Fruits are taken by many small mammals. My Grandmother used to make jam out of the fruits from the "sweet" more north crab apples, but not the "Southern" ones.
