Sweetgum

Liquidambar styraciflua

Description:

Large tree, attaining a height of 150 ft, with palmately lobed, serrate, alternate leaves. Bark is very rough, deeply furrowed, ridges rounded, brown to grey.

Notes:

Pioneer children learned that the sap of this tree makes a sweet tasting, mildly stimulating chewing gum. In Europe and Latin America, people still use it to flavor medicines, and in Mexico and Central America, it serves as a source of incense.
