Gray Morel

Morchella esculenta

Highly sought-after, edible mushroom. Generally 10 - 15 cm., although they can grow larger.

Found in various woodlands and fruit orchards.

Best sauteed with butter, salt & pepper!!! When gathered from the wild, these will frequently (almost always) house small fungus beetles.

Thank you for the kind words, Cindy. The date is correct THIS YEAR! Next year ??? Depends on winter temperatures and precipitation. I look from mid-February to mid-April.

really nice image! I spent many yrs in OK, and never spotted a morel- I'll have to keep my eyes open the next time I visit my family. Is the date right for a February spotting?
