Acraea terpsicore
Brick red with narrow black border. Black dots on wings too.
We had stopped to refuel on the National Highway and I had just stepped out when I saw this butterfly on the weeds by the side of the highway.
When attacked it plays dead and secretes a foul-smelling yellowish fluid from glands in the joints of the legs. It is also distasteful to predators.
