Eastern Cicada Killer

Sphecius speciosus

Description:

Large robust wasp that reach up to 1 1/2 in. in length. They are overall black or rusty in color with yellow bands on the abdomen, rusty colored head and russet wings.

Habitat:

Garden wildlife habitat with native plants chosen to attract wildlife.

Notes:

These are a large digger wasp species that hunt Cicadas to provision their nests. The adults feed on nectar and other plant exudants. They generally do not sting unless roughly handled.
