Hippocampus erectus
3-4". Elongated; swims upright with head above body, tail dangles below; armored with lines and ridges. Head and tubular snout angle downward. Color variable: gray, brown or dull red. Dorsal fin fan shaped, tail prehensile, finless, curls around vegetation.
Sea grasses and man made structures in shallow water.
Swims weakly by rapid vibration of dorsal fin. When mating, pair makes musical sounds; female lays eggs in males pouch; young hatch and are expelled by male one at a time several weeks later.
