Zvonimir's blenn. Babosa de bandas

Parablennius zvonimiri

Description:

With the characteristic shape of the blenids and cryptic coloration, with branching tentacles over the eyes, the maximum length described is 7 cm. The usual color is dark with seven white spots, but during mating the males present a bright orange color for attract females to their territory (this is the case of spotting).

Habitat:

Mediterranean rocky coast of Cabo de Palos (Murcia).

Notes:

It lives close to the demersal seabed, on rocky and poorly lit coasts such as hanging rocks or caves, common in rocky reefs among algae, which it feeds on. The female deposits the eggs inside an empty mussel and the male, after fertilizing them, takes care of them until they hatch. They yawn as a defense to drive away rival males from their territory.
