Roosevelt elk

Cervus canadensis roosevelti

Description:

The largest N American deer. This herd was all youngsters

Habitat:

near the ocean in scrub, in a wildlife preserve with limited access from sunset to sunrise

Notes:

Their indecision reminded me of a bunch of schoolboys who knew they were in trouble. We saw many tracks on the beach itself. Elk seem to like the seaweed and salt
