Northern Red Bishop

Euplectes franciscanus

Description:

Northern Red Bishop is also called the Orange Bishop. The color can be different. Black with orange throat to breast and back of head. Upper back and tail are also orange in the breeding season. Females and non breeding males can look like small finches.

Habitat:

These were found near a drying pond, and sheltering in bushes and trees.

Notes:

I witnessed something odd about these birds. A wonderful way to protect themselves. These bird are found mainly in small flocks. When these birds sense danger they flew into bushes and would brush the branches with their wings to create a sound that I actually thought there was some kind of animal moving around in the bush.

Introduced by accident and seems to stay pretty much in just a few areas in SoCal.

Thank you again. I was excited to finally find one but more surprised that there were over 20 male and females in this spot.
