Florida Chicken Turtle

Deirochelys reticularia

Habitat:

semiaquatic turtles, found both in water and on land. They prefer quiet, still bodies of water such as shallow ponds and lakes, ditches, marshes, cypress swamps, and Carolina bays. They prefer water with dense vegetation and soft substrate.

Notes:

Spotted attempting to cross the road. I stopped, picked it up (reluctantly as I don't like to be handling the wildlife) and put it across to the side it was headed to because this stretch of road is 55mph and there were cars coming in the distance and it struck me as perilous for the turtle. It wasn't too happy to be handled and hiss/grunted at me, but was otherwise docile. Once it was safe and started moving again I took a couple of photos. Why did the Chicken Turtle cross the road? Apparently they often move from pond to pond.
