Resplendent Quetzal

Pharomachrus mocinno

Description:

Considered by many to be the most beautiful bird in the world, the Resplendent Quetzal's most stunning feature would be its glistening, elongated tail feathers. They are much longer than the entire body of the bird, and have long been prized by the ancient Aztecs. In fact, the Quetzal was considered by them to be divine, and is associated with the serpent-god Quetzalcoatl.

Habitat:

Cloud forest

Notes:

This is a nesting pair. They nest in large tree cavities. When the male would enter the nest, his long tail feathers would remain outside.
