Banded Sand Snake

Description:

Banded sand snakes are relatively small reptiles only reaching seven to ten inches in length. The snake has a flat, shovel snaked snout, no visible neck and is covered in bands of dark brown to black on the tail. These bands have pale yellow to reddish orange saddles between the bands. The coloration of the banded sand snakes belly is a pale or whitish color. There are anywhere from twenty-four to forty-eight bands on the tail of this particular snake species.

Habitat:

Banded sand snakes make their homes throughout the United States, Southern Baja California in Mexico and in Sonora. They live in the arid regions with loose soil or sand such as the desert where they spend the days in the shade. These snakes are highly adaptable to burrowing in the sand, they actually swim in the sand. They are a nocturnal species and S shaped indentations in the sand can be used to find its location
