Black Chinned Hummingbird

Archilochus alexandri

Description:

I think this is a black-chinned hummingbird. I was looking through pictures of immature rubythroated hummingbirds and females and couldn't quite decide. I know the adult male black chinned have a beautiful purple ring at the bottom of the throat. I cannot see that in this picture.

Not a problem. I think the odds of you seeing a Ruby-Throated in your location are very low.

Thanks Ryan, I agree. I also read that in poor light the purple markings are not very visable. It was getting twards dusk when the photo was taken.

It's fairly common for that purple to blend into the black on a Black-chinned Hummingbird. I'm 99% sure it's a male Black-chinned, based on your location and the lack of white outer tips on it's tail.
