Bananaquit

Coereba flaveola

Description:

This cute little bird has a black head and back with an obvious white eyebrow stripe. It has a down-curved bill and a red/pink ?gape? (clear view in last pic), and a yellow breast and underbelly. I liken one of the calls this bird makes to a pull start of an engine but at a higher pitch.

Habitat:

This little guy was chowing down on an orange in an orange orchard near Syndicate, Dominica.

Notes:

This orchard was along segment 10 of the Waitukubuli Trail (Colihaut Heights to Syndicate) near Syndicate, Dominica (The location gives only a rough idea). There was a number of Bananaquits eating the oranges in this orchard and in the same vicinity were some Jaco Parrots! Photos of them will follow later. First identification: I asked a local person. Verified by 'Dr Birdy' Bertrand Baptiste
