Bunchberry or Creeping Dogwood

Cornus canadensis

Description:

A slow-growing perennial herbaceous subshrub growing 10–20 cm tall, generally forming a carpet-like mat (Wikipedia). Often found in large colonies in areas of dappled shade or along the woods edge.

Habitat:

Along the granite shoreline in Acadia National Park. Needs moist, cool soil and shade (partial shade is best).

Notes:

Food for Moose. Spruce Grouse, Veery, Philadelphia Vireo, and Warbling Vireo eat the fruit.
