Basilica Spider

mecynogea lemniscata

Description:

Beautiful spider. Spins a dome shaped web out of small square grid like web, egg sacs suspended from a horizontal tether. Easily seen in morning or late afternoon as sun lights up web.

Habitat:

woodland/wetland

Notes:

One of my favorite spiders. Has an incredible dome shaped web which, under close examination, is actually a gridwork of small squares. Hanging right above the top of the dome on a horizontal tether is one or more egg sacs, where the mother guards them.
