Mexican Spotted Owl

Strix occidentalis lucida

Notes:

Went for a hike in Miller Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains. Stopped for a lunch break, and heard a jay calling incessantly. Found the jay mobbing this owl just off the trail. Note to all wildlife watchers out there, angry songbirds can lead you to encounters like this!

Thank you for your comments everyone! JoshuaGSmith, I agree, they are one of my favorites too. Miller Canyon is sort of a classic place to see them, but I've also had pretty good luck seeing them by hiking on the Echo Trail to Echo Park in the Chiricahua National Monument at night. Good luck!
