Hey "gavanwp!" I think your spotting is more likely one of two dragonflies: either a Great Blue Skimmer; or a male Eastern Pondhawk. The former has a white face; the latter has a green face. Your photos are a little blurry so I can't be sure, but it appears the dragonfly's terminal appendages are white (see Photo 1); if so, then I'd go with male Eastern Pondhawk as the more likely identity.
