Red Underwing Moth

Catocala Ilia

Description:

The Ilia Underwing, Beloved Underwing or Wife Underwing (Catocala ilia) is a moth of the Noctuidae family. The species can be found in the Eastern part of the United States as well as southern Canada. Subspecies Catocala ilia zoe can be found in California and Arizona. These large moths are well camouflaged when at rest (unless the choose to rest on a white wall or on a wooden door), but when flying they have striking red flashes under their wings, and black and white undersides. The wingspan is 65-82 mm. The moths flies from June to September depending on the location. The larvae feed on Oak, including black, burr, red, and white oaks.

Yep, that is what I was thinking, though there are so many red underwings in the US, I would submit to bugguide.net or http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org for a more professional identification.

It might be Ilia Underwing - Catocala Illia, that one is from US. Hope it helps.

I was thinking maybe some have migrated? Or been brought over accidentally on board a boat or such.

Hello RhiannonGeraughty, this cannot be Catocala nupta, for the Red Underwing is a European species.
